Elevating mechanical properties for superior performance.

The Cold Drawing Process

From raw materials to the final product, Keystone Profiles’ commitment to Quality processes (ISO 9001 accredited) ensures optimal results. Scroll the images below to explore the process that defines Keystone Profiles in the industry.

    1. Raw Material

We begin the cold drawing process by acquiring SBQ hot-rolled steel bars in the grade requested by our customer. Our legacy in steel production has granted us access to a robust portfolio of suppliers.

    2. Pointing

We reduce the size of the first few inches of the raw material so it will pass through the die.

  • Close-up of industrial rollers or rollers of a manufacturing machine with a glowing red heating element in the background.

    3. Annealing

We anneal bars to assure the material has the proper hardness and ductility to allow for a successful draw. This thermal process works to remove internal stresses by reducing the dislocations in the crystalline structure of the material.

    4. De-scaling & Lubrication

We de-scale the steel on-site to achieve a clean surface for the application of undercoats and lubricants.

  • Close-up of a metal rolling machine or forge with a cylindrical, grooved component and a textured metal bar, showing signs of wear.

    5. Cold-Drawing

We pass the pointed end of the bar through the die opening. The draw bench then grips the pointed end of the bar, and draws the bar through the die to achieve the size, shape, finish, and mechanical properties you require. Our process yields a custom profile or standard shape with a size tolerance measured in a few thousandths of an inch. Displacement of material eliminates the waste that occurs with traditional machining methods.

    6. Straighten and Cut

We pass the cold-drawn bars through a straightening process to achieve the specified straightness, then cut to the length you require.

    7. Packaging and On-Time Shipment

We deliver what we promise. Your custom profile steel is packaged and shipped on-time to your facility.

Utilizing a near-net shape saves our customers machine and labor time, reducing raw material requirements and adding capacity to their production. The increased throughput is truly a value-add for the market, so our customers can make more of their product with less time spent in the machining process.
